No to Astronomy - Why Astronomy is Not a Good Hobby?

15 December 2007 5 Comments

By reading this blog it is easy to figure out that I am interested in astronomy. I am keen on few hobbies, and astronomy is one of those. It is fantastic to watch the stars and wonder how super huge the space is. It feels good to understand many things and phenomena outside of this planet. Shortly said, astronomy is a fantastic hobby.

Wait a minute! Why the title of this article is against astronomy? Well, there are pros and cons in astronomy as a hobby, and in this article I present those things that make astronomy as not a good hobby. Do not take this too seriously..

Reason #1: Sleepless nights cause troubles in your life

Say, you get interested in observing Saturn (or any other planet you can see). You turn your telescope towards Saturn and watch it the whole night. You write your notes and you read about Saturn on your laptop. You take few dozens of photos and you start photoshopping them already at 4 am. Basically you spend your whole night outside watching the sky. You sleep zero minutes. At work in the morning you feel like beinga zombie, a living dead. Ok, you might think (and explain to your wife as well) that it was only one night, but next day you do the same. You find yourself watching Saturn night after night. You are hungry for better and better photos of Saturn and you get more and more interested in it. Then you discover a new object. You are in a trouble..

Watching the stars every night instead of sleeping makes you feel tired all day long. You not effective at work, you become angry, you start forgetting things, you go to sleep when your wife wants to spend some time with you.. I know, I have experienced it. You know what? I have never learned from it! I still keep on staying up at nights..

Reason #2: You do not focus into your job

When you really get interested in astronomy, you start taking thinking about it all day long. You think about it when you should work. You sit in a meeting and watch your client talking, but you do not listen to him. You think about the nebula (such as M42) you have just discovered. Your focus is not in your job and that is not good. You get paid for what you do at work and you really should focus into it, but astronomy is taking over your job. This is why I say no to astronomy.

Reason #3: Equipment is expensive

If you start running your investments are pretty small, say max $300-$500 for shoes and clothes. If you start astronomy, you first spend some $500, but soon you need $2000, $3000, and more. You need binoculars, a telescope, a laptop, photoshop, a digital camera, objectives, filters… lots of stuff which cost very much. If you really get interested in astronomy, it might turn out to be an expensive hobby.

Ok, sleepless nights, focus not in your job, expensive equipment.. Good reasons not to start astronomy as a hobby. Well, who cares? Astronomy is a great hobby. Do not care about those reasons, go for it!

The first and third reasons really bother me a lot. The first one is true especially that I’m a graduating student. Instead of worrying about my report paper which is due after the christmas break, I’m always preoccupied on my next observation. If the weather is bad (like now) I’d rather read books and blogs regarding Astronomy. My day is not complete without doing anything related to Astronomy, hahaha! The 3rd reason poses another problem because every time I observe planets, comets and nebula, I always crave to see them more clearly & large enough so that I can distinguish their features. Such desire means more complicated & expensive equipment. Nevertheless, I still love Astronomy and these two problems won’t stop me!

..that should be the 2nd reason not the 1st one :D.

Good points Erika, thanks! Sometimes I get furious because I know I won’t have money enough to purchase what I would like to, but it won’t stop me being interested in astronomy. Sleepless nights are annoying but you can get used to it :) I have slept 5-6 hours every night for yaers due to my studies, work and hobbies I fell pretty good. It is a conscious choice.

Do not think what you CAN’T do. Thnk what you CAN do and never give up in astronomy if you are really interested in it…forget about how expensive is it…it’s your dream to be a astrnomer…and obviously astronomy is to work at night, most of te time and also you aren’t working alone you work with groups. you are not the only person who’s having all these expensive eqipment, sleeping trouble, and not focusing on job. think there are a lot of people who might be having all these peroblem you might not be alone. what about those astronomers who are working so hard for our planet( Earth and galaxy milkyway) think you are the one who can change this world. if there were no sciebtists like astronomers we would be learning so much about space that you are interseted in.
